An illustrated one hour talk about the unique 1851 Religious Census and how it was measured and conducted in Gosport.
All the places of worship that existed on the peninsula at the time will be described and shown and the reasons for this once and for all time investigation, paid for by the Government of the day, to find out exactly how many people actually visited their local church on 30th March 1851. How did this census come about? What were the circumstances that led to this investigation? And how was it viewed in Parliament and in the country?
If you think Brexit was contentious, come and find out how a century and a half ago a different, but just as troubling question was bothering Parliament and having repercussions locally.
