IN PERSON

YourSpace, 51-52 High Street, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 1DF
Explore Gosport’s LGBTQ+ past. Discover how legislation in the 18th and 19th century impacted on real lives; such as a Royal Naval surgeon who was executed in Portsmouth Harbour in 1809…
Join this talk and exhibition by Voices for Pride, an LGBTQ+ history project focusing on uncovering the history in the local area. It will showcase the story of one persons life in particular; James Nehemiah Taylor, a Royal Naval surgeon who was sentenced to death for having “committed unnatural and detestable crimes” and the search for his resting place. You’ll also hear about some of the other people that have been uncovered and their stories.
Young people will deliver this event, explaining their archival research, and the journey it has lead them on to understand the impact that law has had.
