Since 1753, ‘Dead Man’s Mile’ was the much-traveled funeral procession route from Haslar RN Hospital to the nearby cemetery. This talk and guided tour explore the history and the beauty of this site…
Gather in the Chapel to first enjoy a brief oral history of Haslar Hospital and the origins of its cemeteries from the opening of the Hospital to the present day, with photographs displayed in the mortuary chapel. Next, take an informative walk through the cemetery where the guide will detail the many historic events and stories linking the listed monuments and graves, the Royal Navy, and Gosport.
Gosport and ‘Turk Town’, why has our old town got this name? Could the mystery be solved by looking at the Turkish graves that lie here?
The cemetery is a Site of Special Scientific Interest full of wonderful trees and other flora and in September our very special ‘Autumn’s Lady’s Tresses’, a beautiful tiny Orchid will be seen in abundance.
Lying alongside Alver Lake the cemetery is a Haven of peace and tranquillity. Lots to see, touch and hear, plus time for peaceful contemplation too. Perhaps a time to reflect and thank the many hundreds who are buried in War Graves here.

Access
This is a natural environment, with shingled pathways and uneven surfaces. Most areas are accessible to wheelchairs and buggies. Large print info can be available. No accessible toilet on site but one is available nearby at the Fighting Cocks Pub. Sensible footwear is essential. Insect repellent might be advisable. Please bring a drink with you, especially if the weather is hot. Accompanied children of all ages are very welcome. Dogs on leads are welcome too.
Additional Information
Please arrive to meet your Guide 10 minutes before the start time. If you are unable to make the guided tour times, you are still welcome to visit the site, learn from the printed information available in the chapel, and explore the grounds. A short written history will be available for visitors to take away with them.

Long brick wall, opposite Monckton Road. Bus stop outside of the lodge. On the No.11 bus route (only four buses per day, no bus on Sunday)
