A NEW WALK AROUND THE DARK SIDE OF GOSPORT

  • Post category:Blog

This year our researchers have been busy creating an experience in the dark side of Gosport’s history. This 90 minute “adults only” guided walk isn’t based on buildings, but on hidden, social history.

You’ll hear about murder, suicide, hanging, prostitution, baby-farming, smuggling, and press gangs. To spice up the proceeding you’ll also get a glimpse of some gentlemen’s wallet-size erotic photographs from the 1850s.

History lovers will enjoy hearing about two great fires of Gosport, suicides, murders and baby farming. And of course there was plenty of prostitution and apparently the Gosport prostitutes were considered a rough lot. If you were an angelic looking boy you could be pressed into the theatre to pass as a girl as in those days females were banned from appearing on stage.

The walk will encompass the sites of old pubs such The Highlander, now a bike shop and premises where other pubs have come and gone.
