PROVINCIAL BUS RALLY, GOSPORT
– Stokes Bay 7 August 1000-1630

This year Gosport Heritage Open Days shall again be supporting the Provincial Bus Rally, handing out the new 2022 programme and providing information on new and traditional events.
Visitors to our stand will be able to see all the events on the programme and learn about others still being registered. Volunteers on the stand will also be talking about the 20+ new events and the many family friendly events available FREE TO ALL this year.
Visitors to The Provincial Society rally, at Stokes Bay, will learn about the company’s history of horse drawn trams, electric trams and motor buses up to the present day.
You can also visit and ride on traditional Provincial buses and coaches and bring back your memories of bus trips on Gosport high street of yesteryear.
Volunteers who repair the fleet of vehicles, some dating back to 1920’s will be on hand to discuss restoration and repairs!
The name Provincial has been associated with public transport on the Gosport peninsula and, latterly, a wider area of South East Hampshire since 1872. Although the name fell out of use around the start of the millennium the current business, First Solent, still operates from Hoeford, on the site of the early 20th century tram depot built by Provincial.
The Provincial Society, formed in 2003, is preserving the artefacts, memories and heritage of the various Provincial companies – Provincial Tramways, the Gosport & Fareham Omnibus Company and the Provincial Bus Company – together with associated and subsequent operations. The society has a wealth of information about the effects of WWII on Gosport transport and the catastrophic fire at Hoeford Depot.
The society is fund raising for a transport heritage museum in the Gosport area where vehicles in the collection can be securely stored and shown. The museum will also enable visitors to view some of the archives from Provincial days providing a source of information about how and where the passenger transport operated from the horse drawn tram days to now.
