IN PERSON
The Gosport Shed, c/o St Vincent College, Drill Hall, Mill Lane, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 4QA
Visitors will be given a guided tour of a 19C naval gunnery drill shed which has been sympathetically converted into one of the most attended Men’s Sheds in the country.
The tour will show how the building has been utilised to offer retired men the opportunity to take part in many practical and social activities.
The Shed Guides, identified by their yellow tops and name tallies will lead visitors round in small groups of no more than 8. Guides will endeavour to relay relevant facts and answer questions through each phase of the tour. Experts within each field or section will be on hand to further enhance the visitor experience.
It is intended to run two groups simultaneously. The first group will be shown the outside of the drill shed, the external buildings and allotment gardens, with “Shedders” on hand to describe their particular appreciation of Shed facilities. This part of the tour should take about 30 minutes. The second Group will enter the main building and will be amazed at the transformation from an almost derelict building, into the terrific space that offers so much to the retired gentlemen of Gosport.
Visitors will see the hobbies workshop, the model railway layout, the 3D printer room and the metal workshop and any current projects described. The music room will be showing a video of the ukulele, skiffle, guitar, and choir groups. The first group will now enter the drill shed. The second group will now be led round the outside of the building etc. On completion of both tours the visitors will be able to sit down in the lounge and enjoy a video of the history of the “Shed” movement and how the Gosport Shed has developed.
