Gosport Museum & Art Gallery, 19 Walpole Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 1NS

Ham Lane is well-known today by locals for the building that is the one remaining ward of a late 19th-century Isolation Hospital. Local people also recall the Maternity Home, as many were born there. But there is a lot more to discover about this road…

Why was it called a lane?
Where does it lead?
What did local children get up to at the end of the lane?
What is the link between the lane and the speaker’s surname?
Why was there a local protest about the choice of site for the isolation hospital?
When did the isolation hospital become a maternity home?
What happened to the lane as a result of the Second World War?
And finally – was there a gibbet in the lane?!

Duration 60 minutes.
