Guided Walk
51 Clayhall Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 2BB
On this guided walk, within the tranquillity of Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery, you’ll learn about the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar from the 1740s, and where they buried the dead. You’ll hear many stories and find out about Dead Man’s Mile!
Gathering in the Mortuary Chapel, you’ll be introduced to the history of the Royal Naval Hospital Haslar and the origins of the hospital cemeteries up to the present day. You’ll hear about how funerals were conducted in the past and the great comparisons to today. Photographs will be displayed in the Chapel.
Then you’ll set out on an informative guided walk through the Cemetery, and many stories connected to the Listed Monuments and Memorials will be told.
Gosport and ‘Turk Town’: why has our old town got this name? Could the answer lie here within a small Turkish Cemetery?
The Cemetery is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, full of wonderful trees and other flora. When visits are made in September, our very special ‘Autumn Lady’s Tresses’, a beautiful, tiny Orchid, will be seen in abundance.
And there will be time to reflect and thank the many hundreds who are buried in the War Graves here.
A short written history will be available for visitors to take away with them
