‘Brothers in Art’ – The Snapes of Gosport (Event from 2023)

IN PERSON

Illustrated Talknew events

Richard Martin Gallery, 19-23 Stoke Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 1LS

Richard Martin, a specialist on the lives and work of Gosport’s most celebrated artists, Martin Snape and his brother William, will give an illustrated lecture on the brothers at his gallery.

Richard Martin founded his gallery on Stoke Road, 43 years ago, during which time he has developed an expertise on the Snape brothers and their work.

Many of their paintings have passed through the gallery, including atmospheric and evocative views of the town as it looked over a century ago.

Sadly, the infamous ‘Gosport wrecking ball’ of the mid-20th century reduced much of the historic old town and its environs to rubble. Today’s much-changed appearance gives extra resonance to the paintings.

Assisted by his wife Elaine, Richard will show many images of the old town during his lecture. There will also be an opportunity to view several original works.
