Illustrated Talknew events

The Alverbank Hotel, Stokes Bay Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 2QT

In this 80th year since the end of WW2, Gosport D-Day Fellowship presents this illustrated talk on the key roles that Gosport played during that time…

Sitting in the opulence of The Alverbank, looking out over the serene waters of The Solent, you may be surprised to learn what a different scene this was in 1942-44, during the build-up to, and operation of D-Day embarkations.

In 1942, Stokes Bay was chosen as an embarkation point for tanks and support vehicles destined for Normandy, all to be loaded at Hards G1 to G4. From then on, the whole of the Bay became a restricted area, as secret work went on, and detailed preparations were made…

You’ll learn about these four embarkation points, from where thousands of Allied troops and tons of tanks, artillery and equipment left for France on D-Day June 5/6, 1944.
