Unfortunately, the original speaker for ‘When I was in the Navy…’ has had to cancel but we are pleased to bring you two different talks on a similar theme.
Wednesday 15 September: 1800 – ‘The Pompey Pals remember… ‘ by The Pompey Pals
In this talk by The Pompey Pals, you’ll hear about some of the naval campaigns which resulted in the ultimate sacrifice for so many local sailors and intense grief to hundreds of families in our area: including the Battle of Jutland (1916) and HMS Hood (1941). Also, you’ll learn more about the Pompey Pals Charity and the background to some specific local servicemen who they have researched.
The Pompey Pals Charity looks to honour and commemorate all Portsmouth area citizens who have served in this country’s armed forces, or who have lost their lives as a result of enemy action from 1914 to the present day.
Friday 17 September: 1800 – ‘Living the Dream, Serving the Queen’ by Richard M Jones
From 1950s boy sailor to the sailors who currently serve, you might hear about the runs ashore, the lifelong friendships, the funny stories, near incidents and the ships they served on.
For over 400 years the Royal Navy has been the pride of the British Isles, but it wouldn’t be the organisation it is today without the people who make up the crews of these ships and establishments.
Richard M Jones, historian & author, will share his own and some veteran’s experiences of serving their country in the senior service. Whilst drawing on some content from his latest book ‘Living the Dream, Serving the Queen’ (a common matelots response when asked how they are) Richard will deliver an informal presentation which will encourage participation from veterans at the event.
