Illustrated Talk
Fabrosa Room, Hornet Services Sailing Club, Haslar Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 2AQ
Gosport was the cradle of post-war sail training. Here many of the modern organisations were born: London Sailing Project, Ocean Youth Club, Sail Training Association, Sail Training International, Association of Sail Training Organisations.
The end of National Service and the pre-war work of Kurt Hahn at Gordonstoun created impetus for a new approach to youth work afloat. Leisure yachting became possible once more, and philanthropists made their yachts available for sail training.
This was not the rough apprenticeship of commercial square riggers, nor the rigid discipline of training for the Royal Navy: it was intended to enable young people to fulfil their potential. The same impetus in other parts of Europe led to the first Tall Ships Race in 1956, intended to be the last celebration of great sail – in fact it was the start of an international movement that continues today.
Contributors to this fascinating talk will be: Paul Bishop, Peter Newell, Dawn Bishop, and Peter Cardy. Visitors will be invited to contribute their own knowledge and experience.
