Illustrated Talk

Grand Magazine at Explosion Museum, Heritage Way, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 4LEnew events

Passenger Transport transformed since the earliest days of the stagecoach, and this talk will focus on the history of the various routes that link different parts of Gosport, plus the vehicles, their operators and the people behind the wheel.

Gosport has a rich transport heritage and this talk by The Provincial Society’s archivist and local transport historian, Chris Richardsen, will focus on passenger transport by road. Starting in the era of the stagecoach, take a journey through Gosport’s history courtesy of horse-drawn trams, electric trams, and motor buses, culminating in the latest zero-emission electric buses that entered service in April 2024.

Many residents and visitors will recall Provincial’s green and cream buses in the 1950s and 60s, but Provincial was just one of many proprietors that operated buses in the borough during the twentieth century. In addition to discussing the various types of vehicles and the routes they operated, Chris will also take a look at the personalities behind the wheel and will illustrate the talk with numerous vintage images of the streets of Gosport, plus artifacts from The Provincial Society’s archives.

Note: Entry to the Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower is NOT included in this HODs event.
