Guided Walk
Meet by Tourist Information Centre, Bus Station, South Street, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 1EP
A chance for children to take a journey through time and explore the background of various passages that lead off the High Street in Gosport…
Alleyways are key features of our High Street and legend has it they were favoured haunts of the C.19th naval press gangs.
However, they have much changed over time. Whereas in the past many would have led to courtyards and workshops today they largely lead into car parks or open spaces.
This guided walk for children will celebrate the history and stories of these overlooked spaces and explore the meaning behind their local names such as ‘Carters Yard’ ‘Hobbs Passage’, ‘Wises Alley’ and ‘Black Bear Yard’.
We’ll start by the Ferry, in the tracks of the old wherry men, then dive in and out of alleys up to the Gosport Museum and back again.
Children will be supplied with an ‘i.spy’ card to help identify with the past.
Under 16’s must be accompanied by an adult.
Duration approx 90 mins.
