Several generations of people have given the nickname ‘Palmerston’s Follies’ to the massive Victorian forts along the crest of Portsdown Hill, overlooking Portsmouth and its harbour. Learn all about the forts and the reason for their nickname…

Local Victorian fort enthusiast, Ian, will speak to you about the history of the Portsdown Hill Forts during his informative, illustrated talk.

You’ll discover why the forts were built, the importance of their design, and details of their construction. You’ll also learn how the forts were used, what became of them over the years, and their place in the local defences. Why were they called ‘Palmerston’s Follies’, and did they deserve that nickname?

Turn off Military Road into Kings Academy Brune Park School, and follow directional signs to carpark on the left, and path to The Hub. There is a pedestrian entrance to The Hub closer to the traffic lights.
