Guided Walk
Spring Garden Cottage, Spring Garden Lane, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 1LP
Martin Snape’s paintings have long been synonymous with the topographical history of his hometown, Gosport, and its environs.
For several decades across the 19th and 20th centuries he recorded the ever-changing scene, particularly in and around the harbour, to a degree of accuracy and technical skill that has never been locally surpassed. Indeed, several of his works were accepted for inclusion at Royal Academy exhibitions between 1874 and 1901.
Thankfully, many of his paintings survive today in museums and private collections.
Richard Martin is a specialist in the life and work of the town’s most celebrated artist and gives occasional lectures on him and his family.
This walking tour, lasting an hour or so, will start from Snape’s home and studio and will take in several of the areas he frequented and painted – mostly within what was the old, fortified area of the town – and will culminate at Richard Martin Gallery in Stoke Road for a private viewing of several of Snape’s original paintings.
Duration approx 60 – 90 mins.
