Explore Gosport’s rich heritage with a walk from St Marys Church, Alverstoke, passing by the Regency Crescent Gardens to Victorian Fort Gilkicker. Learn about the civilian battery men who manned the Fort and its history…

Learn about St Mary’s Church, discover the role of the regency gem Crescent Gardens, before passing the Institute of Naval Medicine on the way to Fort Gilkicker.

Learn the significance of Sites of Special Scientific Interest along the way, including typical flora and fauna of the beach and the lagoons.

Fort Gilkicker is ‘Palmerston’ fort built in 1860’s to defend Portsmouth area from a possible French invasion. Who lived here? What was life as a civilian battery man? How did they use the fort to cook in and live?

This historic fortification is currently being redeveloped into luxury apartments.

Access

Unfortunately, due to uneven ground on the beach around Fort Gilkicker, this event is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. No parking is allowed within the Parish Centre grounds, please. On-road parking only. Toilets, including accessible ones, are available within St Mary’s Church (opposite the Parish Centre) and also along the Stokes Bay route.

St Mary’s Church Parish Hall is immediately opposite the main entry to St Mary’s Church. Your walk will return to this spot. On-road parking only, as Parish Centre parking is prioritised for functions at the Church on both days.
