Compton Cinema Organ – last of its type! (Event from 2023)

Show / Display

The Ballroom, Thorngate Halls, Bury Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 3PX

Be transported back to the time of silent films with the sound of this unique Compton Cinema Organ, usually hidden away behind the stage! Tour the workings behind the curtain, then enjoy a recital, perhaps even tinkle the keys yourself…

This Compton Cinema Organ has been in the Ballroom at Thorngate Hall since 1981 but was originally built to provide music and sound effects for Silent Films. Built in 1934, and having not been modified since it is now the last of its type still surviving in original working order AND concert playable condition!

If you want to explore a real hidden gem, drop by for a tour ‘behind the stage’ to view the many pipes and the various other instruments that provide the full range of sounds required for a silent film. You’ll be amazed!

Then you can just sit back and enjoy as a member of the Organ Club plays to entertain you and to demonstrate the versatility of the organ. Or perhaps be adventurous and try playing this wonderful organ yourself…

Duration approx 60-90 minutes.
