This bastion is part of the embankments that surround the town, locally known as Vicars Bank or Tragedy Bank. If you wonder why ‘Tragedy Bank’, the Friends will enlighten you. The original gun emplacements, terreplein, rampart, moat, and brick caponier covered way can be seen. Also, some of the magazine and shell stores that are built into the embankment will be open.
Come and hear some stories of its history and latest research. Visit the Community Garden and look out for wildlife as you enjoy walking over this recently preserved part of Gosport’s Defence Lines.

Access
The site has uneven ground and grass inclines so perhaps not accessible for manual wheelchairs. Some on-road parking for Blue Badge holders. Other car parks are close by. Accessible toilets are 5-10 minutes away, including Changing Places facilities at Gosport Discovery Centre and Gosport Museum and Art Gallery. At some, but not all times, Holy Trinity Church may be open to view for HODs and has accessible toilet facilities. Please bring a fold-up stool or chair if you need rest points.
Additional Information
Dogs must be on leads. Open-air so suitable footwear, and outdoor clothing is advised. Also insect repellent as by water. No refreshments on site (although many cafes and shops are close by) but perhaps bring a picnic to enjoy in this wonderful vantage spot by the sea.
