The Somme: A family story (Event from 2018)

First Light Cafe, 68 High Street, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 1DR

In this short but meaningful talk, Joyce Brown will recount how her relative, Reginald Westbrook, lost his life in the Battle of The Somme. Reginald was a Gosport Fireman and had no need to go to war. But he did his duty. A very moving tribute was paid to him in 1919 and you’ll be able to see the newspaper report on that. Joyce will also show his medals and the Widow’s Penny with his name inscribed on it.

The venue for this talk is very appropriate. Sharpe’s Café is run by FirstLight Trust, a charity helping former members of the armed forces and emergency services (of all ages from 19 to 94) to adjust to civilian life. With delicious home-made cakes and coffees available daily, Sharpe’s is a welcoming spot for civilians and veterans of any rank to mix and relax. We are pleased that they have opened their doors to host this talk.

Duration approx 60 mins
