Gosport Solent Brass premieres ‘Fanfare for Gosport’ composed by Kirsty Devaney.
‘Fanfare for Gosport’ acknowledges and celebrates the heritage and people of Gosport, and each movement of the piece reflects an aspect of Gosport. The first movement, ‘Metal and Salt’, takes inspiration from the rich history of Gosport as a naval town. The movement tries to capture the claustrophobic atmosphere and sounds of a submarine as it is slowly dives deeper and deeper. The second movement, ‘Looking Out Looking Back’, focuses on the stories of those from Gosport. The final movement takes the idea of a fanfare and is more forward looking.
New Dimensions, a Hampshire-wide music initiative, commissioned Kirsty Devaney to work with Gosport Solent Brass to create a new work for the town.
Kirsty Devaney is a composer, workshop leader and music education researcher. She is a graduate and Junior Fellow of Birmingham Conservatoire and in 2014 gained a PhD research position at Birmingham City University investigating composing in secondary school education. Kirsty is particularly interested in introducing new music to those who may be less familiar with it and specialises in writing music for young and non-professional musicians.
