The Memorial Gardens, Haslar Hospital, Haslar Road, Gosport, Hampshire, PO12 2AA
Entry through the green pedestrian gates on Haslar Road.
Shore Leave Haslar is based in the Memorial Garden at Royal Haslar Hospital and it is a horticultural therapy project for Service Veterans who have physical and mental health support needs.
This beautiful and peaceful garden has both historic and contemporary aspects. In former years, it was a cemetery for the hospital, so there are some very interesting graves to discover and, since it closed, many memorial trees have been planted, some of which are quite unusual.
There has been much published about the therapeutic aspects of gardening and at Shore Leave Haslar you are able to see how they use gardening as therapy for the Veterans. You’ll see how they grow vegetables and flowering plants from seed and nurture them to maturity. One of their specialties is chillies. New projects are introduced each year, for example last year we saw the new fruit cage and a gourd arch. The white garden is maturing as it reaches the year point.
This year we have made some changes to enable us to maintain social distancing. We will be offering a ‘takeaway’ cake and drink service and the plant, vegetable and craft tables will be open. To reduce the need for providing change all visitors are asked to bring plenty of change and small notes.
The main garden area only will be open. There will be no access to the greenhouses and vegetable bed section, or the picnic tables, but we will ensure there are places for visitors to sit within the main garden.
Come for as long as you like within your allotted ticket time; although there are no organised guided tours, information will be available and you may be lucky enough to get a volunteer who can tell you more of the history.
